Menu Review – Candied Bacon Skewer with Chips

Menu Review – Candied Bacon Skewer with Chips

The typical list of the best Disney snacks reads like a ketoer’s nightmare: Dole Whip (colorful, frozen, fruity sugar), popcorn (starch in a keepsake bucket), churros (sugary, unshaped dough), Mickey Pretzel (salty, shaped dough), Mickey Premium Bar (frozen, chocolaty sugar), Candied Bacon Skewer with Chips…wait, BACON???

You read that right: bacon.

[Potato-quality pic of said bacon]

I came across this little gem at Westward Ho Refreshments (across from Country Bear Jamboree) in Frontierland en route from my Haunted Mansion FP+ to my Pirates of the Caribbean FP+, and it is now my favorite Disney keto snack. Slow down there…I said “snack”; this does not supplant the delicious meatfest meals at Liberty Tree Tavern and Biergarten Restaurant and Regal Eagle Smokehouse.

Now I know you’re probably thinking, “Candied”? “Bacon skewer”? “Chips”??? But put your mind at ease! The name of this snack is completely misleading.

I don’t know whether the CM in charge of sugar played hooky the day I was there or what, but I only detected the slightest hint of sweetness. I’m hoping what I experienced is the standard recipe because what I ate had 1/4 to 1/8 teaspoon of sugar on it AT MOST, which would amount to a gram or less of carbs…completely worth it even if you’re trying to stay under 20 grams/day while on vacation!

I don’t know about you, but I have never seen even the thickest of thick-cut bacon skewered, and I certainly wouldn’t want to be the guy in charge of threading that needle. Fret not! This, my friends, is not bacon, but PORK BELLY! I’m sure Disney chose “bacon” over “pork belly” in the name to avoid creating an association between food and Piglet or Hamm from Toy Story in the minds of guests. What you get is not a crispy, paper-thin piece of meat, but rather a tender, juicy hunk of the most delicious fruit of the pork tree.

Hand the bag of chips to your kid. You will not be hungry after this snack. Westward Ho, indeed, for the ultimate Disney snack. Giddy up…Keep Ketoing The Kingdom, Kids!
